The Hunter’s Moon Is Crowned Winner Of The 2022 Scotch Egg Challenge
21 Jun 2022
Making its triumphant return for 2022, the Young’s Scotch Egg Challenge has a new champion: The Hunter’s Moon!
Now in its 10th year, last night (Monday 20th June) saw the egg-citing return of the highly competitive challenge as a star-studded line-up of 17 chefs battled it out to be named this year’s winner. Hosted in The Guinea Grill’s event space, Guinea 23, the contest got off to a cracking start with scotch eggs galore, from the classic to the downright decadent, with Oliver Marlowe & Hugh Beatson-Hird of The Hunter’s Moon reigning victorious.
Crowned by the illustrious panel of egg-spert judges, the winning creation, aptly named ‘The Golden Egg’, included a Burford Brown egg, encased in a special bespoke sausage meat blend with cured foie gras, white truffle, seasoned panko breadcrumbs and topped with gold leaf, served alongside truffle mayonnaise topped with shaved white truffle and whipped foie gras parfait.
Close runners-up were Young’s own Executive Chef, Matt Sullivan with a 28-day dry aged lamb, anchovy, sorrel and Burford Brown scotch egg, while taking third was Nokx Majozi of Holborn Dining Room with a beef and pork egg with plenty of spice. Other chefs taking to the stoves to showcase their creations included Fallow’s Jack Croft and Will Murray, Will Bowlby from Kricket and James Knappett and Alex Harper of The Cadogan Arms.
Free-to-attend and sponsored by Estrella Damm, guests tucked into the Guinea Grill’s own scotch eggs throughout the evening while the judging took place. Compered by journalist and maitre d’ Joe Warwick alongside the Evening Standard’s, David Ellis, all eggs were sampled by a line-up of culinary experts including Tatler’s Fay Maschler, BigHospitality’s Stefan Chomka, The Guardian’s Bob Granleese and The Telegraph’s Lisa Markwell, alongside special guests Darragh Curran, the Guinness Guru, and chef Richard Corrigan.
With the evening concluding with celebration drinks in the Guinea Grill, the victor’s egg will be available to try at The Hunter’s Moon in South Kensington for a limited time, while competitors can have another crack at the Scotch Egg Challenge next year.
