Acclaimed restaurant Akira restaurant at Japan House London has launched an exquisite Japanese inspired afternoon tea, comprising a menu of authentic Japanese confectionary, wagashi, and delicious sushi bites.
Replacing the typical three-tiered tower of finger sandwiches and scones, celebrated chef Shimizu Akira has designed a modern platter of Japan’s best-loved sweet treats and savoury snacks, served in the restaurant’s bespoke ceramics, allowing guests to explore a myriad of Japanese flavours rarely seen on the London food scene.
Guests to the restaurant, which recently gained Michelin Bib Gourmand status, can try mochigashi , pounded rice cakes with a variety of sweet bean paste fillings; yokan, a firm jelly-like dessert flavoured with matcha, red bean or plum; dorayaki, a Japanese pancake sandwiched with sweet red bean paste; and senbei, sweet crispy rice cakes. European delicacies will also be available – a light Portuguese Castella cake, and German layered sponge Baumkuchen – both of which are immensely popular in Japan, where matcha and other local flavours are incorporated into the recipes.
The Afternoon Tea for Two menu comes complete with a selection of Akira’s carefully crafted sushi, and a choice of coffee, soft drinks or specially selected green and smoked black teas from Ippudo and Kaneroku Matsumoto Tea Garden, Japan’s finest producers. A glass of sparkling sake can also be added for an additional £7.
Afternoon tea at Akira, Japan House, is served Monday – Saturday between 14:30-17:00 and is priced at £28 per person, with a minimum of two people sharing.
Those looking for a lighter option can alternatively opt for the ‘Japanese Tea Set’ menu, which includes the same wide selection of green and black teas, coffee or a soft drink alongside a choice of wagashi and desserts for £12 per person.
Bookings can be made by calling the restaurant on +44 20 3971 4646 or via the website.

About Shimizu Akira
Shimizu Akira is the Executive Chef of Akira at Japan House London and European Director of the Salt restaurant group. Self-study and side-along learning with famous chefs allowed him to hone his cooking skills. In 2002 Akira joined the Salt Consortium, opening a series of successful restaurants in Japan and the UK. His restaurant at Japan House is his most recent and primary restaurant venture, where he spends most days cooking as the Executive Chef. The restaurant received a plate award in the Michelin Guide (UK) in 2019.
