Dating back to 1832, The Devonshire in Balham is a true local and home to many wonderful stories from over the years. The character of Boycie in Only Fools and Horses was inspired by a previous Devonshire landlord and snooker legend Jimmy White began his career at the pub’s tables. Following a recent refurbishment, original features from its past have been rediscovered, and with plenty of contemporary additions, this is the perfect place to enjoy anything from a quick pint of your favourite craft beer, to a three-course supper.
Old Meets New
Travel through time as you step into the gin palace-inspired front bar. Gather around the grand centre table or move through to the Dining Room, now flooded with light from the with newly uncovered skylights. Spot the eye-catching painting of Vivienne Westwood that overlooks diners, diamond shaped embossed walls and geometrically placed vintage lamps. Finish your journey in the contemporary Conservatory – a bright and airy space with rediscovered exposed brickwork, an unearthed hidden port window and a welcoming communal table in the centre.
Come spring, the extensive Garden will open with a brand new Burger Shack, outdoor bar and under-seat heating for chillier days.
The Devonshire menu takes direction from what’s in season and highlights the very best of British produce. From laid-back brunches to speedy lunches and onto dinner, not forgetting the fabulous Sunday roasts, there’s always a dish to satisfy your cravings at The Devonshire.
Starters include lamb-stuffed quince with pomegranate, coriander and a lovage crème fraîche; and Brixham crab and Lincolnshire Poacher gratin with smashed minted peas. Select a few to share with friends, or go for a sharing board of baked Camembert or seasonal charcuterie, perfect for an after-work drink.
Meaty mains include maple and thyme glazed beef short rib with celeriac remoulade and smoked mashed sweet potato; and Hampshire pheasant with beetroot and vanilla puree, walnut and sesame seed granola and pheasant leg croquette. Lighter plates such as roasted aubergine with kale pesto, spiced aubergine puree, pomegranate, coconut flakes and chilli; and hot smoked salmon with poached hen’s egg, kale pesto and kohlrabi remoulade are ideal for lunchtime dining.
Desserts are given the Devonshire touch with Earl Grey and date sticky toffee pudding served with vanilla ice cream and saffron poached pear with cardamom and coriander syrup, crème fraîche ice cream and granola crumble.
A Drink For Any Occasion
Wash all that good stuff down with a pint from The Devonshire’s extensive collection of beers; from rotating brews on tap to the well-stocked fridge filled with cans and bottles from an array of smaller craft brewers. A carefully curated wine list is available, with grapes divided by flavour rather than region. Spiced cocktails include a Rhubarb Negroni, Allspice Daquiri and Citrus Chilli Martini.
From post-work pints to long weekend lunches, The Devonshire is Balham’s original British pub updated for the 21st Century. Come and make your own wonderful story at The Devonshire.
