St Albans Gets a New Local
11 Mar 2021
St Albans is set to welcome a new pub to the high street with the opening of Alban’s Well, launching its terrace from Monday 12th April. Located on the bustling St Peter’s Street, the new Young’s pub has taken over the ground-floor of the former BHS site and is undergoing an extensive refurbishment. The city’s newest pub and dining room, complete with alfresco patio, will be serving up a menu of quality British pub food, craft beers and cask ales, as well as a self-service wine experience from the ‘Wine Wall’, offering a wide range of wines by the glass.
Influenced by the local landmarks, the 168-cover pub and dining room has been designed using sustainable materials; from reclaimed tiling and upcycled, antique furniture to mosaic flooring, exposed ceilings and curved timber panelling inspired by St Albans cathedral. Brass beer taps will feature on the centrepiece bar, overlooking a dining area of rustic wood topped tables and curved, plush booths. Added touches to the dining experience will include a ‘Kitchen Table’ for larger group dining, as well as counter dining directly in front of the open kitchen, where diners can watch the chefs in action.
Outside is a 62-cover terrace for alfresco dining; ideal for the summer months with group tables, parasols and adorned with planters and greenery. Benches and tables will follow the sustainable theme, using reclaimed wood and furniture.
Led by Head Chef Jon Green, menus will focus on small plates for social dining. Running from brunch to dinner, expect quarterly-changing menus of seasonal specials, championing under-utilised and ethically sourced ingredients, with over half the menu dedicated plant-based and gluten-free dishes. Sustainability will be at the heart of the food, from zero-to-waste dishes to those featuring ingredients sourced from local farms.
The drinks list will feature a wide range of cask ales and craft beers, including Two Tribes, as well as a premium wine list. In a first for Young’s pubs, Alban’s Well will offer a self-service ‘Wine Wall’ with top-up cards for guests, giving drinkers the chance to sample a wide variety of red, white, rosé and bubbles from wine dispensers. An extensive list of cocktails will feature at the bar, alongside a selection of No and Low tipples from non-alcoholic gins to kombucha, as well as freshly pressed juices.
Located in the heart of the high street, Alban’s Well is set to open seven days a week, with the outdoor terrace launching from 12th April, and full opening set for 17th May 2021, subject to government guidelines.
