Bringing something fresh and exciting to the county, this grown-up, all-day dining restaurant and bar in the heart of Loughton, on the High Street, is open seven days a week, from breakfast and brunch through to drinks and dinner. Whilst it’s an Essex hotspot, any ol’ Tom, Dick & Harry will be pleased to know it’s only a short trip from London, on the Central line.
Interiors are contemporary and comfortable with a mix of modern and vintage furniture with stripped back industrial features contrasting with soft, luxe fabrics and vibrant pops of colours. As well as the main dining room, there is a lounge area complete with baby grand piano, bar counter dining and an al fresco terrace.
Head Chef Michael Carter (Dehesa, Boundary, Axis) prepares everything from scratch. The menu features signature dishes in the form of Nibbleinis™ – small plates combining impeccably sourced local and British ingredients with Mediterranean flavours – enjoy as a light bite, starter or sharing feast. Dishes include tartine of Cornish Crab with Isle of Wight tomatoes and celery; chargrilled octopus served with tomato, chickpeas and ‘N’duja; and mustard glazed pork spare ribs with apple salad.
More substantial plates come from the charcoal oven with dishes such as whole or half lobster on chips; chargrilled tuna with romesco, spring onion and almonds; and 20-day aged steaks in a variety of cuts. Other mains include baked aubergine with feta cheese, walnuts, spring onions; and Tom’s burger – a 100% British beef patty served with caramelised onion, smoked bacon, rocket and Cheddar cheese.
Save room for dessert: choices of charcoal dropped ice cream; dark chocolate mousse with candied peanuts and ice cream; or sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel could prove impossible to resist.
SIP AND BE SEEN
Wine connoisseurs be at the ready for a wine list that won’t disappoint. Whilst reds, whites and bubbles feature, it’s all about the pink stuff at Tom, Dick & Harry’s. From pale Provence wines through to frosé (rosé slushies); from big producer names through to boutique varietals; it’s a veritable rainbow of rosé and the biggest list in Essex. House wine is served by the magnum, drink as little or as much as you like – a post-meal measure ensures you only pay for what you drink.
Cocktails are inspired by some of the world’s most famous Toms, Dicks and Harrys; mixed, muddled, shaken and stirred to perfection. Signature serves include ‘Just Like That’, taken from Tommy Cooper’s tendency to mix his spirits, featuring a blend of fresh & floral gin, Martini Rosso vermouth and yellow Chartreuse; or get up close
and personal with a Tom Hardy – the ‘I Liked You Better When You Were Drunk’ stars citron vodka, Cinzano, grapefruit, lemon, basil and brown sugar.
Gin-lovers will delight in Tom, Dick & Harry’s 20-strong collection of big brand and boutique gins – the 20-strong collection is showcased on a flavour wheel that takes you from ‘juniper rich and robust’ through to ‘fresh and floral.’
With lazy Saturday mornings made for brunching, dishes come sunny-side-up and range from the virtuous and nutritious to the downright decadent, whilst end of the week brings the Sunday Roast Club. Kick-off the day with a bespoke Bloody Mary just the way you like it from the ‘build-your-own’ bar before opting for your choice of joint with all the trimmings, carved by the head of the table for sharing family-style.
Kids are more than welcome and well-behaved ones finishing their mains qualify for a free dessert – that’s an incentive for clearing those greens off the plate! Add to this, acoustic performances from local musicians tinkling the ivories of the restaurant’s baby grand piano and Sundays just got a whole lot more sociable.
Tom, Dick & Harry’s – Essex’s latest dining destination is certainly more class than commonplace.
