Subtly sexy, endlessly stylish and infused with everything it means to be French, Bon Vivant has arrived in Bloomsbury. Bringing a little joie de vivre to the area, expect French classiques updated for the modern diner, a glorious list of French grapes and a cheeky cocktail or two.
Inspired by owner Charmaine Abomnes’ upbringing, Bon Vivant is that chic dining spot that promises to help Londoners fall in love with France all over again. Hand-crafted classics come with a twist courtesy of Head Chef Oliver Kuehler (formerly Les Deux Salons); so come sip on your morning-after-the-night-before espresso, gossip over lunch with friends or dine at dusk with your amour.
Serving everything from croissants and coffee au matin to light lunches, intimate dinners and bottomless brunches, Bon Vivant’s homemade dishes cater to every craving. Inject a little style into your lunch break with shared selections of charcuterie and cheese, served with a fresh baguette or opt for the daily-changing tartines with mixed salad. Larger plates of calamars à la provençale (squid with sundried tomatoes, olives and courgettes); moules a la crèmeand bavette steak with truffle creamed spinach, shallots and red wine jus are sure to please.
Come le dîner, begin with silky boeuf tartare topped with quail egg or soupe de poissons with creamy rouille. Move onto mains of magret de canard with parsnip purée, apples, shallots and a honey thyme jus; poulet farci with mushrooms, butternut squash and tarragon jus; or pan-fried cod with seasonal vegetables, clams and a bourbon velouté.
If there’s one thing the French are known for, it’s the sweet stuff. Dip your spoon into a pot of crème brûlée, updated with an infusion of Earl Grey tea and a sprinkling of spiced pear; fondant au chocolate with hazelnut ice cream; and baked apple tarte tatin, all made by hand. If you’re not eating for pleasure, you’re breaking the rules.
Indulge at the weekend and come and ‘Get Frenched’ with Bon Vivant’s Drunch – the perfect bottomlessbrunch with dishes such as pancakes with berries and maple syrup; the B.V.Breakfast (a French take on the classic full English) or upgrade to ‘The Morning After’, topped with a succulent steak (£15 supplement).
There’s little more synonymous with France than wine. At Bon Vivant, special attention is given to a spectacular selection of French grapes with a few carefully selected Spanish and Italian bins also available. Wines are divided by colour and region with highlight sips including Paul Jaboulet Ainé, Crozes Hermitage 2015 from Rhône; Givry 1er Cru, Boix Chevaux, Domaine Joblot 2013 from Burgundy; and Dauphin de Grand Puy Ducasse 2011 from Bordeaux.
Make like a modern Frenchie with the enticing cocktail list. The signature Dirty Pink with gin, lemon syrup, Chambord raspberry liquor and egg white makes a seductive aperitif or sip on a Mont Blanc with Crème De Cacao Blanc, Amaretto, Cointreau, Stolichnaya vodka and cream. Even the classics have been given a French twist with Mojito Imperial à La Française adding red vermouth to the familiar mint, lime and rum combination.
Providing the perfect hideaway from the bustle of London life, choose from the decadent dining room, petit bar or relaxed wrap-around terrace to lounge. When the sun is shining, classic woven bistro chairs on the terrace are set facing the street, akin with Parisian people watching. Once inside, guests will find a dining room that simply exudes elegance. Slip into a banquette for brunch with girlfriends, sink into a navy velvet single seat for dinner or find yourself giggling with new friends at the intimate bar. Throughout the space, notes of naughtiness will come in the form of provocative artworks hidden in the powder rooms and deliberately displayed in the dining room, set against a chic colour palette of grey, pink and rose gold.
Come be seduced in true French style – Bon Vivant, je t’aime.
