Fishers Gin, founded by Andrew Heald, has opened its own distillery, the first in Aldeburgh.
Fishers “Original” London Dry Gin was launched in 2016. Andrew initially used the still at Adnams, but always hoped to move production to his hometown of Aldeburgh, next to the salt marshes, from where the recipe originates. In February 2020, after two years of planning and work, the distillery was commissioned and took over the entire production of Fishers.
The Fishers Distillery is a converted beach house a few yards from the shingle and is the closest distillery to the sea in the UK. It is open for pre-booked tours during which guests are welcomed with a perfect Fishers & Tonic, usually to the sound of crashing waves, and followed by a ninety-minute tour that includes:
- An insight into the history of Fishers and the local area, including a virtual tour of the River Alde
- A guided tour around the distillery explaining how gin is made and an introduction to foraged and local botanicals
- A botanical tea making experience using traditional and native botanicals
- Tutored tasting of Fishers, unreleased gins and seasonal cocktails
Tours cost £30 per person and can be booked at fishersgin.com or 01728 454201. Tours are conducted in line with current government Covid-19 regulations.
Fishers is made using the “London Dry” method meaning that all the flavour in the gin is derived from botanicals that have been distilled. This includes locally foraged roots, leaves, seeds and berries that are steeped in the base spirit for 12-16hrs before distillation in Watson, a 400 Litre Copper Pot Still. A large part of the Fishers recipe is made up of British plants all of which are either foraged or grown by Andrew and Fishers Distiller Ben Bewley-Pope.
Andrew Heald, Founder Fishers Gin says: “I wanted to create a gin that reflects the beauty and diversity of our coastline. The Fishers recipe uses a significant proportion of botanicals from the Alde and Ore Estuary, and surrounding coast. Opening the distillery here, just a few hundred yards from the river and salt marshes is a dream, and gives us the opportunity to showcase our gin, its production and origin all at once”.
