FAFA’S – MIDDLE EASTERN STREET FOOD IN COVENT GARDEN
Fafa’s brings Middle Eastern street food to the masses with its first UK opening on Monmouth Street in Covent Garden’s Seven Dials. From what started out as a modest street food kiosk in the Finnish town of Punavuori, Tel-Aviv-born Doron Karavani has now put Fafa’s firmly on the map; with 40 sites across three countries, it is widely heralded by chefs across Scandinavia as their fast food of choice.
STREET FOOD FEASTING
Open all week from breakfast through to lunch, dinner and cocktails, this Finnish favourite is inspired by the flavours of Tel Aviv. On offer is the brand’s signature pitas filled with the freshest, quality ingredients alongside magnificent mezze and vibrant salads.
Breakfast dishes from £5.50 include broken eggs with salad and tzatziki; and avocado and fried egg with chilli and mint. All-day pitas, served from lunch until late, are packed with tabbouleh, sweet and smoky matbucha, fresh tomatoes, kale, chopped chilli and parsley. Wrap your hands around the crowd-pleasing falafel – combine with halloumi, hummus, goat’s cheese and pesto, or roasted vegetables and feta. Exciting flavour combinations, exclusive to London, include grilled shrimp with harissa and tzatziki; Fafa’s burger (patty) with tahini; and slow cooked short rib with harissa and beetroot.
For a low carb meal, the house mezze box features spiced chicken breast, grilled shrimp or Fafa’s burger served with falafel, hummus, tabbouleh, matbucha, a range of vegetables and pickles, tahini and tzatziki whilst salads include chicken and tabbouleh or goat’s cheese and pesto. Don’t miss on-trend sides such as fries with homemade beetroot ketchup and halloumi strips with harissa for a glorious mix of crunchy, spicy and salty.
With dishes to take out starting from £5.90, generous portion sizes and customisable options, Fafa’s menu is certainly satisfying.
Fresh, fast and flavourful thinking continues when it comes to drinks. Creative cocktails include the ‘Original Long Drink’ (£4.50) made from a legendary Finnish mix of gin and grapefruit soda, created for the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952 and Tel Aviv-spiced frozen margarita – handed out for free whilst you wait. The fridges are full of chilled beverages with bite including the Ace and Freak flavoured alcoholic spritz, Eden Mill Gin & Tonic, Orchard Pig cider and craft beers from London brewery Two Tribes. Soft drinks such as small batch kombuchas and cold press juices are also available, along with great value Fafa’s own-blend coffee to go.
The biggest flavours can be found in the smallest spaces. The look combines fresh colours with an industrial edge; red walls contrast with emerald green tiles, statement flooring and a bright suspended ceiling filled with lush planting and bold menu signs. Counter-style service is perfect for time-poor people on the go with window ledges to perch and a few seats outside.
