Bypass the eggs Benedict, pass on pancakes and forgo the avocado, it’s time to experience brunch Basque-style from Eneko at One Aldwych. Three Michelin-starred chef Eneko Atxa has taken inspiration from his home town of Bilbao to create one of London’s first Basque brunches. Theexciting and authentic menu is rooted in the region’s rich gastronomic heritage and traditional flavours, as well as the bringing together of friends and family around the table that forms the beating heart of Basque culture.
Available every weekend from Saturday 4th February, the new brunch menu at Eneko at One Aldwych is influenced by a quartet of Basque culinary styles – Euskal Azoka (street food), Gallinero (eggs), Txoko (classics) and Asador (grill).
Starting the occasion with some famous Basque hospitality, every diner will receive a complimentary glass of cava or seasonal fruit juice. A range of Basque-inspired Aperitivos includes Patxarini, traditional sloe liquor Pacharan, coconut rum and coffee; and Golden Mary, Eneko’s take on a Bloody Mary using spiced-infused vodka, golden tomato juice and celery foam. This accompanies a wine list populated entirely by Spanish bottles including four from Eneko’s own family winery, Gorka Izagirre.
Food options are intended to be mixed and matched as appetite demands. Euskal Azokastreet food provides perfect bites for sharing in keeping with those found at the Basque Country’s many festivals. Favourites include Txistorra, spiced Basque sausage cooked in cider with soft corn talo; Suckling pig on brioche; and Mini Basque pizzas with anchovies, local Idiazabal cheese and tomato compote
Bringing a taste of a traditional Txoko members club to One Aldwych, guests can expect hearty and colourful old-style recipes. Dishes feature Gernika beans with Savoy cabbage and piparrak and a delicious Basque take on black pudding crafted with leeks and onion, served with piquillo peppers and crispy corn talo.
The humble egg, a staple ingredient for the Basque household straight from the Gallinero (hen house), is introduced through signature dishes of Scrambled eggs, sautéed potatoes and jamon; and Arraultzak, a rustic dish of fried eggs, wild asparagus, piquillo peppers, onion, flour crisp and mashed potato.
Hearty Asador charcoal-style grills include Duck breast with green Gernika peppers; Yellowfin tuna with garden leaf salad; and Rhug Estate rib eye steak (for one or two to share) with spring onion salad. All three dishes are served with haystack fried potatoes.
Sweet temptations to round-off this Basque brunch journey include the classic Torrija vanilla sponge.
Brunch is available on Saturday 11.30am-2.30pm and Sunday from 11.30am-3.30pm and can be booked in advance online firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 020 7300 0300. Walk-ins are also welcome.
