The undeniably cool vibe of Barcelona’s best beach clubs has been transported to the heart of London’s historic Docklands this summer. The Anna de Codorníu Terrace on the Thames pop-up is embracing the region’s laid-back lifestyle, impressive cava heritage and obsession with tapas –it’s the only place to be this summer. Hola Anna!
Open from May until the end of September and located at the 17th century Grade I-listed Columbia Wharf at DoubleTree Hilton Docklands, this glamorous riverside terrace is just a short ferry ride from Canary Wharf pier. Sun-drenched and decked in cool shades of white and gold, the Anna de Codorníu pop-up features plush sofas, ‘Anna’ cushions, comfy deckchairs and oversized parasols, all ideal for leisurely and languid lounging. Come sundown, fluffy white blankets and flickering lanterns set the mood for evenings of live Spanish music and chilled-out DJ sets.
Work your way through the full list of stunning Anna cavas, each evoking flavours and aromas that easily rival champagne and prosecco. Sip on Anna Blanc de Blancs, the gourmet sparkling of Barcelona; indulge in Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Noirs using 100% red Pinot Noir grapes; and savour the flavours of Anna de Codorníu Rosado with notes of berries and green apple. A must-try is the Anna de Codorníu Dulce, served on the rocks, whilst designated drivers and the teetotal can enjoy the alcohol-free Codorníu Zero.
Alternatively, keep things casual with sangria sharers, including Crystal Sangria (white wine, Grand Marnier, Anna Blanc de Blanc, elderflower), Lady Sangria (rose wine, Cointreau, rum), Rojo Sangria (red wine, citrus, forest fruits, cloudy lemonade) and firm Anna favourite, Royale Sangria (Anna Blanc de Blanc, peach schnapps, elderflower, citrus, cucumber, mint), or take your pick from a selection of Spanish beers, ciders and spirits.
Classic Spanish pintxos and stylish tapas plates take inspiration from Barcelona’s famous food market, La Boqueria, where delicacies arrive paired with stunning sips. All the quintessential flavours feature on the Anna menu, from fiery chorizo to heady garlic and sweet red pepper.
Meat aficionados can sink their forks into chorizo and manchego bocadillos (Spanish sandwiches); serrano jamon with cherry tomato salsa; and albóndigas de carne. Fish fans can enjoy frito whitebait with lemon and sea salt or ensalada de gambas, served with a zingy paprika and lime dressing.
No Catalonian affair would be complete without classic patatas bravas; generously-filled risotto and artichoke croquettas; or the ubiquitous calamari and aioli.
Come the weekend, the Barcelona Bottomless Brunch (from £15 per person, available between 11am – 2.30pm) offers the perfect opportunity to graze on piquant pintxos and up to two hours of Anna Blanc de Blancs before taking a leisurely stroll along the Thames. Those after something a little later in the day can tuck into the Anna Afternoon Tapas between 3pm – 6pm where two guests can share three tapas dishes with two glasses of sangria for just £21.
Throughout the summer, the terrace pop-up will host a series of events inspired by Barcelona city life. Keen foodies can book themselves a place at the Codorníu Summer School, where paella masterclasses and ‘fizz nights’ exploring the full Anna range will transform you into a cava and culinary aficionado in no time. Event updates will be featured on the DoubleTree Docklands website.
